Fear and Uncertainty to Dominate Security Spending in 2009 in Asia Pacific

By Allan Tan | Jan 21, 2009

The year 2009 is expected to be a challenging year for the information security industry as a result of the aftermath of the global financial crisis.  This heralds a new wave of market sentiments beset with fear and uncertainties.  In light of this, organisations will focus on cutting down overall CAPEX and OPEX costs and maintain tight-fisted IT budgets closely scrutinizing the value of each dollar spent.

Technology predictions

  1. Enhanced focus on “green” solutions and virtualization security.  It’s no longer just about CSR, but ‘green’ solutions that deliver real savings on OPEX, thus creating more savings out of IT budgets.  With the rapid adoption of virtualization platforms for server and desktop management, the need to protect and manage access across these platforms would evolve as being critical.

  2. End-point security redefined.  End-point security products would evolve beyond traditional threat mitigation to encompass access control and information protection.

  3. Steady growth in adoption of integrated security appliances (UTM-unified threat management).  Technology convergence is expected to continue driving market dynamics in the new year.  Enterprises will look towards integrated solutions such as Unified Threat Management (UTM) as a way to reduce expenses and enhance their security posture.

  4. Information-centric security.  While the perimeter security is very important, it is equally vital to secure information at rest, motion and in-use.  Organisations will invest significant resources in chalking-out comprehensive threat mitigation strategy that combines infrastructure and information protection.

  5. Application security - Now is the time.  With more and more attacks targeting the applications, organisations will do well to look into issues such as secure software development, vulnerability management, penetration testing and web infrastructure protection.
